You’re on your couch. A text lights up your screen from a friend: Are you coming to the party tonight?[TRANS].
Your brain instantly understands. Your friend is at the party, or is going to the party. The party is the center of the social universe right now. Your movement is being measured relative to that center.
Most textbooks say come means "to move toward the speaker." This is not just wrong; it’s lazy. It misses the entire point.
Come isn't about the speaker. It's about the "center." It’s a social magnet.
The Magnetic Center
Think of go as throwing a ball. The energy moves away from you. I'm going to the store.[TRANS] You are the starting point, and the energy flows outward.
Now, think of come as a magnet. It pulls things in. It draws people, objects, and even ideas toward a central point. This point is the "mental home" of the conversation.
This "home" can be the speaker's location, the listener's location, or a shared destination.
Can you come over to my place later?
I'll come to your office in ten minutes.
The Mental Destination
Here’s where it gets interesting. This "magnetic pull" isn't just for physical space.
It works for abstract ideas, feelings, and moments in time. Come can pull you toward a realization, a decision, or a state of being. The destination isn't a place on a map; it's a place in your mind.
You're not moving your body. You're moving your perspective.
Everything will come to you at the right time.
How did you come to that conclusion?
The Gravity of "Home"
Come operates on a principle of social gravity. Every situation has a center of importance—a "home"—and come describes any movement toward it. This is the unwritten rule that native speakers feel but never explain.
This "home" can be a physical place (my apartment), a person (me), a social event (the party), a point in time (the future), or an abstract idea (the truth). When something comes out, the truth is moving from a hidden place toward the shared "home" of public knowledge. When a dream comes true, an idea is moving from imagination into our shared reality.
This is why a boss might say, My team really came through on this project.[TRANS]. The team wasn't physically moving. They were delivering on an expectation. The expectation was the "home," and their performance arrived there perfectly.
The Golden Rule is this: Stop asking "Who is speaking?". Instead, ask, "Where is the center of this story?". Come is the verb that describes the journey home.
