chaplain
This role differs from a parish priest because the chaplain does not lead a fixed congregation in a church building. Instead, they are embedded within a secular or professional environment, such as a hospital, prison, or military unit, acting as a bridge between spiritual life and a high-stress institutional setting. There is a strong connotation of emotional support and crisis intervention. While a priest might focus on liturgy and sacraments, a chaplain is often viewed as a spiritual first-responder who provides comfort to people of various faiths or no faith at all during moments of extreme trauma or transition.
Used to refer to the individual person holding the office.
