メモ

Refers to a brief, informal record written quickly to prevent forgetting. The core image is one of transience and efficiency; it is not intended to be a permanent or structured document, but rather a temporary "placeholder" for information.

In Japanese, there is a clear distinction between メモ (memo) and ノート (note/notebook). While a ノート is used for systematic, long-term recording or studying, a メモ is for fragmented, immediate, and often disposable pieces of information. For example, a student might take a メモ of a homework deadline on a scrap of paper, but write a detailed lecture in their ノート.

The word is most frequently paired with the verb 取る (toru - to take), as in メモを取る (take a memo). While other verbs like 書く (kaku - to write) are used, 取る emphasizes the act of capturing information in real-time during a conversation or event.

It can refer to both the content (the note itself) and the medium (the piece of paper or the digital app used for noting). In modern contexts, it is equally applicable to digital "memos" on smartphones as it is to physical paper.
