This term is a highly specialized biochemical designation used almost exclusively in medical, endocrinological, and pathological contexts. It refers to the protein scaffold upon which thyroid hormones are synthesized, making it a critical biomarker for monitoring thyroid health.
In clinical practice, thyroglobulin is primarily discussed as a tumor marker. Because it is produced only by thyroid tissue, its presence in the blood after a total thyroidectomy is a strong indicator of cancer recurrence or metastasis, as healthy thyroid tissue should no longer be present to produce the protein.
