activation complex
This term is a technical specification used almost exclusively in chemistry and biochemistry to describe the peak of the energy barrier in a reaction. It refers to a transient arrangement of atoms that is neither reactant nor product, but a fleeting state of maximum instability.
Because it represents a transition state, the activation complex exists for an incredibly short duration, making it impossible to isolate as a stable substance. It is often contrasted with reaction intermediates, which are more stable and have a finite lifetime.
