郷愁

The word "kyōshū" describes a deep, often bittersweet longing for one's hometown or a period in the past. While it is translated as "nostalgia," it carries a more literary and formal tone than the common word "natsukashisa" (懐かしさ).

"Natsukashisa" is used in everyday conversation to describe a pleasant feeling of remembering something (e.g., "This snack brings back memories!"). In contrast, "kyōshū" suggests a more profound, melancholic, or spiritual yearning, often associated with a sense of loss or an unreachable distance.

It is frequently used in written texts, lyrics, and formal speeches. Using "kyōshū" in a casual conversation about a childhood toy might sound overly dramatic or poetic, whereas "natsukashii" would be perfectly natural.
