The word "kioku" refers to the cognitive process and the stored data of the brain. It is a relatively formal and objective term. In many contexts, it describes the functional ability to retain information or the factual record of an event.

One of the most critical distinctions for learners is between "kioku" and "omoide" (思い出). While both can be translated as "memory," "kioku" is objective and clinical, focusing on the act of remembering or the data itself. In contrast, "omoide" is subjective and emotional, referring to cherished or nostalgic recollections. For example, you would use "kioku" when discussing memory loss in a medical sense, but "omoide" when talking about a happy childhood memory.

In terms of register, "kioku" is used in academic, legal, and medical contexts, as well as in standard daily conversation. When used as a faculty (the ability to remember), it is frequently combined with "ryoku" (力) to form "kiokuryoku" (記憶力), meaning "memory capacity" or "the power of memory."
