この言葉は、数えられない量について述べる際の否定文や疑問文で主に使われます。肯定文では、不自然に堅苦しく聞こえるのを避けるため、通常は a large amount of や plenty of といった表現が好まれます。
また、水や時間、忍耐力などの不可算名詞にのみ使用でき、数えられる名詞の複数形には使えません。数えられるものに対して使用すると、非ネイティブ特有の不自然な表現になります。英語では量と数の区別が厳格に分かれているためです。
