転換

Tenkan describes a fundamental shift or a complete pivot in direction, policy, mindset, or function. It is a formal term and is rarely used in casual, everyday conversation. Unlike the word "henko" (変更), which refers to a general change or modification, "tenkan" implies a strategic or structural transformation—turning something in a completely different direction.

In a psychological or social context, it often refers to a "paradigm shift" or a change in one's way of thinking (意識の転換). In a technical or industrial context, it refers to converting the purpose or form of an object or system (用途の転換).

When using this word, it is most commonly paired with the verb "suru" (to do/to make) or "hakaru" (to attempt/to aim for), as in "tenkan wo hakaru" (to attempt a shift).
