出席
しゅっせき
shusseki
Attendance in Japanese focuses primarily on the physical act of being present at a designated place and time. It is most commonly used for formal gatherings such as classes, business meetings, weddings, or official ceremonies. In these contexts, the emphasis is on the fact that the person is "there" to be counted.
It is crucial to distinguish "shusseki" (出席) from "sanka" (参加 - participation). While "shusseki" refers to the state of being present, "sanka" implies active involvement in an activity. For example, one might "attend" (出席) a seminar just by sitting in the room, but "participate" (参加) in a workshop by engaging in discussions and exercises.
In terms of register, "shusseki" is formal. In casual, everyday conversation among friends or family, native speakers rarely use "shusseki." Instead, they use simpler verbs like "kuru" (来る - to come) or "deru" (出る - to go/attend). For instance, instead of saying "shusseki shimasu" for a casual party, one would say "ikimasu" (行きます) or "deru" (出る).
