The word "shuppatsu" primarily refers to the act of leaving a place to begin a journey. Unlike the simple verb "deru" (to leave/go out), "shuppatsu" carries a stronger sense of purpose, planning, and the initiation of a specific itinerary. It is commonly used in formal contexts, such as travel schedules, airport announcements, or official itineraries.

In a metaphorical sense, it describes the beginning of a new phase in life, a project, or a conceptual starting point. In these cases, it is frequently used as "shuppatsuten" (starting point), emphasizing the origin or the basis from which progress is measured.

When used as a verb ("shuppatsu suru"), it implies a decisive movement toward a destination. While "mukau" (to head toward) focuses on the direction of travel, "shuppatsu" focuses on the moment of departure itself.
