The term refers to a long-form fictional narrative written in prose. While it overlaps with the word 物語 (monogatari), which can mean any kind of "story" or "tale" (including myths, legends, or short anecdotes), 小説 specifically implies a structured literary work, often with a focus on character development and psychological depth.

In modern usage, the scope of 小説 has expanded significantly. It encompasses not only traditional literary fiction (純文学, jun-bungaku) but also genre fiction (大衆小説, taishū-shōsetsu), such as mystery, sci-fi, and the highly popular light novels (ライトノベル), which often target a younger audience and include illustrative elements.

When used metaphorically in phrases like 小説のような (shōsetsu no yō na), it suggests that a real-life situation is so dramatic, improbable, or perfectly structured that it feels as if it were scripted by an author rather than occurring naturally.
