利害

This term combines the characters for profit (利) and harm/loss (害). It does not simply mean "benefit," but refers to the overall balance of gains and losses that affect a party. It is most commonly used in formal, legal, political, or business contexts to describe the strategic positions of individuals or organizations.

In practical usage, it is frequently paired with verbs like 一致する (to coincide) or 対立する (to conflict). When two parties have the same goals or benefits, their interests "coincide"; when their goals are mutually exclusive, they "conflict."

Another critical usage is in the term 利害関係者 (rigai kankeisha), which is the direct Japanese equivalent of "stakeholders." This refers to anyone who has a vested interest in the outcome of a project or decision, whether that outcome is positive or negative. Avoid using this word in casual, everyday conversations about personal preferences; instead, use it when discussing structural or financial advantages and disadvantages.
