The term refers to any resource used for instruction, encompassing a much broader range than just textbooks (教科書). It includes digital apps, worksheets, audio recordings, physical props, and online modules.

While it is most commonly used in school settings, it is equally applicable to corporate training, vocational workshops, or self-study contexts. The register is neutral and professional, suitable for both spoken and written Japanese.

Distinguishing from 教科書 (Kyōkasho): A textbook is a specific type of teaching material. If you are referring specifically to the official book assigned by a curriculum, use 教科書. If you are referring to the overall set of tools used to teach a lesson, use 教材.
