古代

The term refers to a specific historical era, typically spanning from the dawn of written records to the beginning of the Middle Ages. It is important to distinguish "Kodai" (古代) from "Korai" (古来). While "Kodai" refers to a distinct, bounded period of ancient history, "Korai" refers to a continuous state or tradition that has existed "since ancient times" up until the present. For example, you would use "Kodai" to discuss the Roman Empire, but "Korai" to discuss a custom that has been practiced in Japan for centuries.

In a modern context, "Kodai" is almost exclusively used in academic or formal settings. In casual conversation, people are more likely to use "mutto mukashi" (ずっと昔) or "mukashi" (昔) unless they are specifically referring to a historical period.
