The term refers to a person who is under medical care. While it is the standard term used in clinical and professional settings, it defines the person by their role as a recipient of treatment rather than just their physical state.

Contrast this with the word 病人 (byōnin). While both can be translated as "patient" or "sick person," 病人 focuses on the state of being ill or the physical condition of sickness. In contrast, 患者 is a more formal, objective, and medical term used to describe someone within the healthcare system's framework.

In modern Japanese healthcare, there is a shift toward "patient-centered care," which is reflected in expressions like 患者に寄り添う (to empathize with/stay close to the patient), moving beyond a purely clinical relationship to one of emotional support and partnership.
