The core image of "dasu" is the movement of something from an enclosed or internal space to an open or external space. This physical action extends to abstract concepts, such as moving a document from one's possession to an authority (submitting) or bringing a latent ability or result into the open (producing).

When used as "submit," the register is generally neutral. However, in formal settings, such as submitting a report to a superior, the humble form "teishutsu suru" (提出する) is often preferred over "dasu" to show proper respect.

It is crucial to distinguish "dasu" (transitive) from "deru" (intransitive). While "deru" describes the act of something exiting on its own (e.g., "the cat goes out"), "dasu" requires an agent who actively moves the object (e.g., "I let the cat out").

In a broader grammatical sense, "dasu" also functions as a subsidiary verb (attached to the stem of another verb) to indicate the sudden start of an action. However, in its primary transitive sense, it always involves an object being moved or manifested.
