This term refers specifically to the foundational corpus of Jewish law and tradition. Because it is a unique, singular body of work, it is almost always treated as a proper noun and capitalized. It is not used as a general term for any religious text, but exclusively for the Rabbinic collection of the Mishnah and Gemara.

In academic or theological discourse, the word is typically used in the singular. While there are different versions, such as the Jerusalem Talmud and the Babylonian Talmud, the word itself functions as a title for a specific literary and legal entity rather than a countable category of books.
