This term refers specifically to the liquid matrix of the cell. It is often confused with cytoplasm, but the distinction is precise: cytosol is the fluid itself, whereas cytoplasm encompasses the cytosol plus all the organelles suspended within it. As a biological substance, it is treated as an uncountable mass noun. It does not have a plural form in standard scientific usage, as it describes a continuous medium rather than discrete units.
