It is characterized by a lack of movement, mental fog, and a tendency toward avoidance or sleep. While often viewed negatively as ignorance or lethargy, it is considered a necessary component of the cosmic balance, providing the stability and grounding required for physical existence.
In a spiritual or yogic context, the term is used to describe a state of consciousness that is clouded or dormant. Practitioners aim to transcend tamas by cultivating rajas (activity) and eventually sattva (purity and harmony) to achieve enlightenment. Because it is a technical term from Sanskrit, it is typically used in academic, philosophical, or spiritual discourses rather than in everyday casual conversation.
