In actual conversation, it is very rare to address a staff member directly as "Ten-in" (店員), as this can sound overly blunt or clinical. Instead, Japanese speakers almost always add the honorific suffix "-san" (店員さん) when referring to them or speaking about them in a friendly or polite manner.

It is important to distinguish "Ten-in" from "Tenshu" (店主), which specifically refers to the owner or proprietor of the shop. While a "Tenshu" might also perform the duties of a "Ten-in," the former implies ownership and management authority, whereas the latter implies an employee role.

In more formal or corporate contexts, such as department stores, you might encounter the term "Hanbai-in" (販売員), which specifically emphasizes the act of selling, but "Ten-in" remains the most common and versatile word for daily use.
