尊敬

The word "sonkei" describes a deep feeling of admiration and esteem for someone based on their superior abilities, noble character, or significant achievements. It is an internal emotional state of looking up to someone as a role model.

It differs from "keii" (敬意), which refers to a more general sense of respect or courtesy. While "keii" can be a formal social requirement or a polite gesture (such as showing respect to a stranger or a superior in a professional setting), "sonkei" implies a genuine, heartfelt admiration for the person's essence or accomplishments.

In a linguistic context, this concept is the foundation of "sonkeigo" (尊敬語), the honorific language used to elevate the status of the person being spoken about. However, while "sonkeigo" is a grammatical tool used for social navigation, "sonkei" is the actual emotion of respect.

Commonly used with the verb "suru" (to respect) or in the phrase "sonkei no nen o idaku" (to harbor feelings of respect), it is almost always used in a positive context. It is rarely used for oneself, as it describes an upward gaze toward another's excellence.
