責任

The word "責任" covers two primary conceptual areas: the proactive duty to perform a role (responsibility/duty) and the reactive accountability for a negative outcome (liability/blame). While English often uses "responsibility" for both, Japanese speakers are acutely aware of the distinction between "carrying out a duty" and "paying for a mistake."
In a professional or social context, the phrase "責任を取る" (take responsibility) often implies more than just admitting a mistake. In Japanese corporate or political culture, it frequently suggests a concrete action to compensate for a failure, such as resigning from a position or stepping down from a leadership role to show sincerity and atonement.
When discussing duties, "責任を果たす" (fulfill one's responsibility) is the standard expression for successfully completing an obligation. In contrast, "責任を負う" (bear responsibility) is used when one accepts the burden of a task or the potential risk of failure associated with a role.
Avoid confusing "責任" with "義務" (gimu - legal/formal obligation). While "義務" refers to something one MUST do by law or rule, "責任" encompasses the moral and social weight of the outcome resulting from those actions.
