教会

The word "教会" (kyōkai) functions in two primary ways: as a physical location and as a social or religious organization. When referring to the building, it describes the architecture, the space, or the destination for a visit. When referring to the organization, it describes the community of believers, the administration, or the denomination.

In a Japanese cultural context, "教会" is often associated not only with religious practice but also with "wedding chapels" (often called "wedding churches"). These are commercial venues designed to look like churches for ceremonies, even if they are not affiliated with a religious organization. Learners should be aware that in casual conversation, someone saying they are "going to a church" might be referring to a wedding ceremony rather than a religious service.

When describing membership or regular attendance, the verb "通う" (kayou - to commute/attend regularly) is more common than "行く" (iku - to go) to indicate a habitual relationship with a specific church community.
