The word "好評" describes a state where a person, product, or performance receives positive evaluation or praise from a group of people. It focuses on the "reputation" or "critical reception" rather than just simple popularity.

While "人気" (ninki) refers to being liked or loved by many (popularity), "好評" implies a qualitative judgment—that something is "good" or "well-made." For example, a trendy fashion item might be "人気" (popular) even if critics dislike it, but a critically acclaimed film is "好評" (well-received).

In formal or written contexts, it is frequently paired with the verb "博す" (hakusu), as in "好評を博す," which means "to win great acclaim" or "to be a huge hit." This combination elevates the register and is common in news reports, business reviews, and official announcements.
