The word "kenkyū" refers to a systematic and deep investigation aimed at discovering new facts or developing new theories. It is crucial to distinguish "kenkyū" from "benkyō" (study). "Benkyō" generally refers to the act of learning existing knowledge or acquiring a skill (e.g., studying for a test). In contrast, "kenkyū" implies going beyond existing knowledge to uncover something new or to analyze a target deeply for a strategic purpose.

In a non-academic context, such as sports, gaming, or business, "kenkyū" is used when someone analyzes an opponent's patterns or a competitor's strategy to create a counter-measure. In these cases, it is closer to "analysis" or "scouting" than "academic research."
