勘
かん
kan
The word refers to a non-logical, internal sense that allows a person to reach a conclusion or perform a task correctly. It manifests in two primary ways: as a sudden "hunch" (intuition) and as a "knack" (acquired skill).
When used as a hunch, it describes a feeling that something is true or correct without having a concrete reason or evidence. This is often associated with phrases like "sharp intuition" (勘が鋭い) or "a hunch coming true" (勘が当たる).
When used as a knack, it refers to a refined sense of timing, balance, or technique developed through repeated experience. This is not a theoretical understanding but a "feel" for the action, such as the precise moment to release a trigger or the exact amount of pressure to apply when crafting something.
Compared to "chokkan" (直感 - intuition), "kan" is more colloquial and can encompass both innate intuition and learned experience. While "kankaku" (感覚 - sensation/sense) often refers to physical senses or general perception, "kan" specifically targets the ability to make a correct judgment or execution in a specific situation.
