現代

げんだい

gendai

modern times
Noun

Refers to the current era or age, typically viewed from a historical or sociological perspective. It is not merely a point in time (like "now" or "today"), but a broader period characterized by specific social structures, technologies, and values.

In terms of register, it is a standard term used in both formal writing and daily conversation. However, when used in academic or historical contexts, it is often contrasted with terms like 古代 (ancient times), 中世 (the Middle Ages), or 近世 (early modern period).

Avoid confusing it with 今時 (ima-doki), which is a more colloquial and often judgmental term meaning "nowadays" or "these days" (e.g., "Young people these days..."). While 現代 is neutral and objective, 今時 often carries a nuance of surprise or disapproval regarding current trends.

Another distinction is with 近現代 (kin-gendai), which refers to the "early modern and modern periods" combined, typically used in history textbooks to cover the span from the industrial revolution to the present.
