"Benkyo" emphasizes the effort, diligence, and the act of studying hard, often associated with schoolwork or a personal struggle to master something. In contrast, "gakushu" refers to the systematic process of acquiring knowledge, skills, or behaviors. It is more objective and is frequently used in academic, psychological, or technical contexts.

In a behavioral context, "gakushu" implies a change in response or behavior based on experience (e.g., learning from a mistake), whereas "benkyo" would be unnatural in such a scenario. You would not say "benkyo from a failure," but you would say "gakushu from a failure."

In modern technical contexts, "gakushu" is the standard term for "learning" in "machine learning" (機械学習 - kikai gakushu). In this sense, it describes the process of an algorithm improving its performance by analyzing data, rather than a conscious human effort.
