Refers to a physical component that is part of a larger mechanical or electronic system. It emphasizes the functional role of the piece within a whole. While it is the standard term for industrial or mechanical parts, it is used across all levels of formality.
In modern Japanese, the loanword パーツ (pātsu) is frequently used interchangeably with 部品. However, パーツ often carries a nuance of "customizable components" or is used more commonly in hobbies (like PC building or car tuning) and fashion. 部品 remains the more formal and comprehensive term used in manufacturing, engineering, and official manuals.
Unlike abstract components or "parts of a story," 部品 is strictly limited to physical, tangible objects. For non-physical parts or components of a system/organization, terms like 構成要素 (kōsei yōso) or 部門 (bumon) are used instead.
