悪意

The term refers to the conscious intention to cause harm, distress, or misfortune to another. It is not about the actual damage caused, but the psychological state and intent of the actor. In Japanese social contexts, the phrase 悪意はない(no malice/no ill intent) is frequently used as a defensive or apologetic shield when someone's actions have caused offense, regardless of whether the outcome was harmful.

It is distinct from 憎しみ(nikushimi - hatred), which is a deep emotional state of animosity. While hatred is an emotion, 悪意 is specifically the will or intent to act upon negative feelings. Similarly, it differs from 悪行(akugyō - evil deed), which refers to the action itself rather than the internal intent.

In modern digital contexts, 悪意のある(malicious) is commonly used to describe software (malware) or targeted harassment (trolling), extending the meaning from personal interpersonal malice to systemic or technical harm.
