This term is strictly technical and biological, used to describe the tissues or glands that produce a slippery, protective secretion. It is frequently confused with mucus, which is the actual substance produced. While mucus is the sticky fluid itself, mucous describes the anatomy that creates or contains that fluid, such as the lining of the respiratory tract.
