encystment

This term is a specialized biological descriptor used primarily in parasitology and microbiology. It describes a survival mechanism where an organism creates a dormant, hardy shell to withstand extreme temperatures, dehydration, or chemical threats. It is the opposite of excystment, which is the process of emerging from the cyst.
