gay
Adjective
The term has undergone a massive semantic shift. While it once primarily described a cheerful disposition or vivid aesthetics, it is now almost exclusively used to denote sexual orientation. Using it in the older sense of happiness often feels archaic or intentionally nostalgic in modern speech. In contemporary social contexts, the word functions as a primary identifier of identity and pride. While it can be used as a broad umbrella term for the LGBTQ+ community, it specifically targets the attraction between members of the same sex, carrying a connotation of openness and visibility.
