Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island of Corsica in 1769.
He went to a military school in France and became an army officer.
During the French Revolution, he won important battles in Italy and became famous.
In 1804, he crowned himself Emperor of France in Paris.
He created a new system of laws called the Napoleonic Code.
He defeated many European countries and built a large empire.
In 1812, he invaded Russia, but the cold winter and long distances destroyed much of his army.
In 1814, he lost power and was sent to the island of Elba.
In 1815, he escaped from Elba and returned to France.
He became emperor again for a short time, in a period called the Hundred Days.
Later that year, he lost the Battle of Waterloo.
He was sent to Saint Helena, where he died in 1821.
