This term refers specifically to a ritual lamp used in Judaism. While the seven-branched version is associated with the ancient Temple in Jerusalem, the nine-branched version, known as a hanukkiah, is the standard object used in homes during the holiday of Hanukkah.

Because it is a specialized religious object, the word is used almost exclusively within a liturgical or cultural context. It is not used as a general term for any candelabra or lamp.
