The term carries a heavy duality depending on the speaker's geography. In English-speaking countries, it almost exclusively refers to the political entity of the USA, evoking images of capitalism, global superpower status, and the American Dream.

In many Latin American contexts, the term is viewed as a single continental entity. Using it to refer only to the USA can be seen as an erasure of the southern nations, leading to a linguistic tension between the geopolitical identity and the geographic reality.
