Dynein is a specialized term used almost exclusively within the fields of cell biology and biochemistry. It describes a specific class of molecular motors that facilitate retrograde transport, meaning they move cargo toward the center of the cell or the base of a cilium. This distinguishes it from kinesin, which typically moves cargo in the opposite direction toward the plus end of microtubules.
