効率
こうりつ
kouritsu
Efficiency refers to the ratio of output to input. It is not simply about speed or the final result, but about how well resources (time, money, energy) are utilized to achieve a goal. In Japanese, it is frequently used in business, engineering, and study contexts.
One of the most common pitfalls for learners is confusing 効率 (kōritsu - efficiency) with 効果 (kōka - effectiveness). While 効率 focuses on the process and the cost-benefit ratio (doing things right), 効果 focuses on the actual result or impact (doing the right things). For example, a study method might be highly efficient (taking very little time) but have zero effect (you learn nothing).
In terms of register, 効率 is a neutral to formal term. It is used in professional reports and academic settings, but is also perfectly natural in daily conversation when discussing productivity or habits. It is commonly paired with adjectives like 良い (good) and 悪い (bad), or verbs like 上げる (increase/improve) and 追求する (pursue).
Meanings
