The word "技術" covers two primary conceptual areas: macro-level technology and micro-level individual skill. When referring to "technology," it encompasses scientific knowledge, industrial processes, and digital innovation. In this sense, it is often paired with words like "innovation" (革新) or "development" (開発).

When referring to "skill," it describes the proficiency or technique an individual acquires through practice and experience. This applies to arts, crafts, sports, or professional expertise. While "skill" can be translated as "技量" (giryō), "技術" is more common when focusing on the specific method or technical execution of a task.

Avoid confusing "技術" with "手法" (shuhō), which refers specifically to a "method" or "approach" to achieve a goal, rather than the ability or the scientific system itself. In professional settings, "技術" is a neutral and formal term suitable for all registers, from technical manuals to casual conversations about hobbies.
